How to Make the Perfect Chili Recipe for Cold Winter Weather in Minnesota

Chili RecipeWhile it may be feeling cold for Twin Cities residents at the moment, we’re pretty good at “toughing it out”. (Remember, we’re all pretty good at spotting the signs of a seasoned Minnesotan at this point.)

But with February temperatures well below freezing, staying warm can mean more than just tweaking your thermostat at home…

Luckily, we have a “spicy” solution for you: Brighten your weekly forecast and turn up the heat with Pronto’s easy-to-make, sure-to-please, rocket-hot chili recipe!

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  •  ¼ tsp all spice
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  •   ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  •  1 tsp cumin*
  • ½ yellow onion, diced
  •  2 tbsp chili powder*
  • 1-2 tsp crushed garlic
  • 1 lime (2 tbsp fresh lime juice)
  • ½ jalapeño*
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 red pepper, diced
  • ½ tsp cayenne*
  • 1 cup tomato juice (such as V8® Vegetable Juice)
  • salt and pepper to taste

  1. Cook and drain ground beef. Set aside.
  2. Heat a large pan or Dutch oven with olive oil until hot. Add the onions, garlic, jalapeño and red pepper, and sauté until tender.
  3. Add the browned beef, and then the liquids – Worcestershire sauce, chicken broth, tomato juice, lime juice, and honey.
  4. Mix well, reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Slowly add in the tomatoes, and then the spices – all spice, nutmeg, cumin, chili powder, cayenne, salt and pepper. Do not over-salt. Continue to simmer until chili thickens, approximately one hour. Taste throughout, and turn up the heat as needed.

*Measurements for these ingredients are conservative. For those seeking extra warmth, simply adjust these ingredients as desired. Serves 4.
