Summer and hot, sticky weather are right around the corner. Pretty soon your home’s air conditioner will be chugging away trying to keep you and your family cool on those 95-degree days.
While we highly recommend a 21-Point AC Tune-Up before summer officially kicks into high gear, there are also several things you can do yourself to make sure your air conditioner cools your home efficiently.
Here’s our list of air conditioner efficiency tips every homeowner should conduct each spring.
1. Replace air filters
Change these at least every six months. (The “hardware store” filters should be changed EVERY month.) Dirty air filters reduce the efficiency of your home’s air conditioner and make the system work harder. This wastes energy, and it can also shorten the life of the air conditioning system.
2. Clean the outside condenser fins
Dust and grass clippings get caught in the coils and this makes the outside unit work harder. All you need to do is use your garden house to rinse the coils from the inside out. Be careful not to damage the fins – they’re fragile and can bend easily.
3. Inspect duct work for loose joints
Cool air will escape here and won’t reach the rest of the house where it’s needed. Most problems are fixed by using aluminum foil tape bought at your local home repair store. If the problem is severe or if you’re not comfortable climbing around in the attic, consider hiring an experienced HVAC technician – like Pronto – to do this for you.
4. Consider investing in a programmable thermostat
A programmable thermostat lets you easily set the air conditioner to turn on when you need it and turn off when you don’t. These top-of-the-line thermostats connect to your home’s Wi-Fi and are controlled from a smart device for added flexibility. You can even program the cooling and heating schedule while also controlling the system on-the-go. Leaving town for a few days? Turn the system off while you’re away and then turn it back on right before you get home – all from your smartphone!
